Why Oaxaca?
(What Makes This Experience Special)
Oaxaca is known for its food, its beauty, and its traditions. But there's another story here—healing knowledge carried across generations, and modern practitioners navigating the space between culture and contemporary care.
Guided by Local Wisdom
You'll come home with a new lens for every patient shaped by culture and history, a deeper sense of how traditional and modern medicine can teach each other, and a small group of colleagues you'll be texting for years.
-
Connect with parteras (midwives) and curanderas (healers) who share generational knowledge about birth, postpartum healing, and community-rooted care.
-
Stand among ancient ruins and visit rural communities to explore how land, housing, and access shape women's health long before anyone reaches a clinic.
-
Prepare traditional remedies firsthand and learn the rich cultural stories behind local medicinal plants.
-
Have honest conversations with modern-day women's health practitioners about balancing traditional wisdom with contemporary clinical care.
-
Discover traditional food and drinks through the lens of history, health, and community wellness.
-
Complete Continuing Medical Education credits earned directly inside the trip experience—not tacked on as lectures at the end of the day.

Meet your Host
Dr. Robbie Harriford
Founder of Modern Traditions | Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician
Dr. Robbie Harriford is a board-certified family medicine physician, women's health leader, and founder of Modern Traditions, a physician-led company that helps healthcare professionals explore medicine through the lens of culture.
After years of caring for patients, leading clinical teams, and serving as Chief Medical Officer for one of the Midwest's largest federally qualified health centers, Dr. Harriford came to believe that some of the most meaningful lessons in healthcare happen far beyond the walls of a clinic. A bilingual physician with a master's degree in Global Health, Dr. Harriford creates immersive educational experiences that invite healthcare professionals to step outside familiar systems, engage with different ways of understanding health, and return home with practical insights that strengthen patient care.

Where you’ll be staying,
Majagua Boutique Hotel
Majagua Boutique Hotel stands out, in part for doing things a little differently.
It’s housed in a restored 1950s Art Deco mansion, a rarity in the region, and is strictly adults-only, with complimentary craft cocktails served at check-in. It doesn’t hurt that the rooms are light-filled and design-forward, with modern bespoke furnishings, artisan-made textiles, and eclectic art objects from Asia and Africa.
Elevated Oaxacan dishes are served on a treetop-framed terrace, and locally produced mezcal flows freely in the speakeasy-style bar. And, perhaps best of all, the hotel is right in the center of town.
