Oaxaca Itinerary

  • DAY 1

    HELLO, OAXACA!

    DAY 1

    Arrive in Oaxaca City and settle into your private room at our home for the week. Then we’re off to our welcome dinner for your first taste of Oaxaca and a chance to get to know the women you’ll be sharing the week with.

  • DAY 2

    BEYOND THE CLINIC

    We’ll travel outside the city for a day centered on the social determinants of health and the lives of women in rural Oaxaca. Through conversation, a natural dye and weaving experience, and lunch with a local family, we’ll explore how culture, gender, work, economic opportunity, community, and place shape health long before someone enters a clinic.

  • DAY 3

    BIRTHING TRADITIONS

    Today centers maternal health and the women who have carried generations of knowledge around pregnancy and birth. We’ll spend time learning alongside local parteras, exploring traditional approaches to maternal care and the role of the rebozo through conversation and hands-on learning. Together, we’ll consider what changes—and what remains—when traditional knowledge meets modern healthcare.

  • DAY 4

    GENERATIONAL HEALING

    We’ll explore another side of women’s health through traditional healing and plant medicine. Alongside local healers, we’ll learn how medicinal plants and traditional remedies have been used across generations and consider the ways patients continue to move between ancestral knowledge and contemporary healthcare today.

  • DAY 5

    OAXACA, YOUR WAY

    Today is intentionally yours. Visit Monte Albán, take a cooking class, wander the markets and galleries, book a massage, linger over a long lunch, or simply see where the day takes you.

    We’ll share a list of our favorite ways to explore Oaxaca before the trip, but there is no scheduled Modern Traditions programming today. This is your time to experience the city in whatever way feels right to you.

  • DAY 6

    WOMEN’S HEALTH, POWER & PRACTICE

    Our final full day brings the week back to the realities of women’s healthcare today. We’ll spend time with local women's health professionals exploring reproductive healthcare in Oaxaca, then widen the conversation to examine gender, power, machismo, and the ways social and cultural forces influence women's health and safety.

    We’ll close our learning with a final Field Notes Live before gathering for a four-course farewell dinner—a chance to reflect on what we’ve learned, what challenged us, and what we’ll carry back into our own communities and clinical practice.

  • DAY 7

    DEPARTURE

    One last breakfast together before we say goodbye to Oaxaca. You’ll head home with new friendships, a deeper understanding of the many forces that shape women’s health, and, we hope, a different lens through which to see the patients and communities you serve.
